Focus: Business
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in collaboration with the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity held a breakfast presentation titled, Focus on India Series: India’s Booming Economy and the Infrastructure Challenge. Presenters included Mr. Rik Geiersbach, Vice President of Corporate Strategy for The Boeing Company, Varun Bajpai, Chief Executive Officer of SBI Macquarie Structure Management, and Rajat Gupta, Senior Partner and McKinsey & Company’s Mumbai Office.

Focus: Humanitarian, Culture
The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International and the Chicago Committee of Human Rights Watch presented a private evening lecture and reception with Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia Director for Human Rights Watch, on the subject of India and Human Rights. Held at the Loyola University Museum of Art, following the reception guests were able to enjoy private viewings of the museum’s Martin D’Arcy Collection and After the Flood: Eklavya Prasad’s Photographs of Life in North Bihar, India exhibit.

Focus: Education
The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International in conjunction with Chicago Public Schools, presented a private Education in India Roundtable presented by Mrs. Prema Rangachary, Director of Vidya Vanam School in rural India. Topics discussed included the education system in India; the creation of Vidya Vanam School, which serves indigenous children; the challenges of working within low resource communities and the adaptation of varied teaching methods.

September 15-18

Focus: Health
Dr. Deepak Kumar Jain from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College & M.Y. Hospital Indore, participated in the 13th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium in Chicago as part of a grant from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The grant sponsored one physician from each of Chicago's Sister Cities to attend the Symposium.

September 20

Focus: Business
The Executives' Club of Chicago in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, held a one-day summit designed to bring together policy-makers and business leaders to discuss doing business in India and to strengthen relationships between India and the United States. Speakers included: Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari and three Ministers from the Indian Government: Minister of Commerce & Industry His Excellency Anand Sharma, Minister of Power His Excellency Sushil Kumar Shinde, and Minister of Renewable Energy His Excellency Farooq Abdullah.

September 20

Focus: Business, Government
On the morning of September 20th, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Confederation of Indian Industry, in collaboration with the U.S. Commercial Service - U.S. Department of Commerce, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, and the Consulate General of India in Chicago hosted the 2nd Annual U.S. – India Business Opportunities Summit at the Swissotel Chicago. The keynote address was made by His Excellency Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and the program included two panel discussions with U.S. and Indian business executives that explored manufacturing and R & D collaborations. A networking luncheon followed the program.

Focus: Arts & Culture
On the opening day of the 5th Annual Chicago Sister Cities International Festival in Millennium Park, the Sister City of Delhi was represented via a performance by TaalFusion, a contemporary Bollywood inspired dance and workout program. The style is a modern fusion of Indian Classical, Bollywood, Latin, Jazz Hip-Hop and Bhangra dance forms.

The Delhi Committee co-sponsored a Public Luncheon with The Chicago Council on Global Affairs featuring The Honorable Robert O. Blake, Jr., Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, United States Department of State.

Focus: Business
Delhi Committee Chair and President & CEO of SPAAN Tech., Inc. Smita N. Shah, joined distinguishing panelists including the Honorable Forrest Claypool, Cook County commissioner, District 12 and Phillippe Shailee, Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Research and Development, Sara Lee Corporation, at the Executives' Club "New Leaders Circle" discussion and reception.

"Focus on India" series, presented by the Delhi Committee and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

Co-sponsor of "The Next Phase in U.S India Relations: Her Excellency Meera Shankar, Ambassador of India to the United States" program.

Dance Ambassador from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Delhi held a closed Advanced Master Dance Workshop for Gallery 37 students.

April 18

Focus: Business
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs in collaboration with the Delhi Committee hosted an India Roundtable about Engaging the Indian Retail Sector: Product Innovation and Localization with Vikram Bakshi, joint venture partner and managing director of McDonald's India and Sherif Mityas, partner and North American industry and service practice leader at A.T. Kearney, Inc.

Focus: Trade
The Delhi Committee hosted a luncheon at the Drake Hotel in Chicago to welcome a trade delegation from Gujarat, India.

October 24

The Chicago Council and the Confederation of Indian Industry held a luncheon on "India: The Emergence of an Innovative Economy." They hosted The Honorable Dr. Sam Pitroda Chairman of India's Knowledgable Commission and Founder and CEO or C SAM.

November 27

Focus: Health
The Delhi Committee hosted a dinner in support of AACTION Autism, and organization sending an AACTION team of volunteer medical and educational autism professionals to New Delhi and Bangalore. This team provided much needed training and consultation to Indian professionals and families struggling with Autism.

Focus: Government
The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International Program in cooperation with the Chicago World Trade Center hosted a luncheon at the Metropolitan Club of the Sears Tower to honor the Chief Minister of Maharastra, India, Vilasrao Deshmukh and his delegation.

Focus: Culture & Education
The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International Program in cooperation with the University of Illinois at Chicago hosted a special guest lecture in honor of Dr. Chandrakant Mehta to talk about “The Implications of Mahatma Gandhi's Philosophy in the Modern World”.

Focus: Culture & Education
Author Robyn Meredith, a foreign correspondent for Forbes who lives in Hong Kong and covers India and China, spoke at the Union League Club for a special book event and signing sponsored by the Club and the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities. Meredith’s book, The Elephant and the Dragon, discusses Asian giants India and China and the potential effect their rising economies may have on the rest of the world.

Focus: Arts
The Department of Cultural Affairs hosted an opening reception to celebrate the installation of the first exhibition in the United States featuring works of the 21st century created in India – Contemporary Indian Art Exhibit: New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India, which was held at the Cultural Center.

November 26

Smita Shah, Delhi Committee Chair, was featured in an article in Crains's chicago Business Focus on Minority Owned Business: "From India to Chicago" on Monday, November 26, 2007.

November 27

Focus: Fundraising
The Committee cosponsored a fundraising dinner for AACTION Autism. The fundraising efforts supports Dr. Tom Owley and Christopher Flint’s, two of AACTION’s members, trip to Delhi as they will be Keynote Speakers at the South Asian Regional Conference on Autism: Building Bridges in New Delhi, India and Autism: The future undefined in Bangalore, India. In addition members of AACTION will provide a Post Conference Workshop: Training in Structured Teaching in Delhi at the National Center for Autism and in Bangalore at the Asha for Autism.



2006

March 28

Focus: Culture
“Sita Ram,” a fundraiser organized by the Delhi Committee in order to build awareness of the depth and richness of the South Asian arts within the greater Chicago community. “Sita Ram” was held in the Lookingglass Theatre.

Focus: Culture & Education
The Delhi Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program assisted DePaul University's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program in promoting awareness of "One Book, One Chicago" Special Event that featured the novel Interpreter of Maladies and a panel discussion with the author Jhumpa Lahiri.

The City 2000 photo exhibit on Chicago opened in Delhi.

Focus: Signing
Mayor Richard M. Daley and Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit signed Chicago's 23rd sister cities agreement.

Focus: Fundraiser
Dr. Deepak Chopra, one of the world’s most celebrated advocates of mind-body medicine, gave a lecture to benefit the Chicago Sister Cities International Program. The event was attended by nearly 400 people and was followed by a reception in Chopra’s honor.

Focus: Medical & Social Service
CSCIP assisted Brother to Brother in collecting a truckload of general medical supplies, which was sent to assist a United Airlines' Project Airlift India, Earthquake Relief.
