History:Milan can easily trace its history to Roman times, as is evidenced by Roman ruins which are still visible throughout the city! The city became a city-state in the 11th century and entered a period of rapid growth. It came under Spanish rule in 1535 and passed to Austria in 1713. Napoleon made Milan the capital of his Italian Republic in 1802. During World War II the city was heavily bombed, but many artistic and cultural treasures, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, were left intact. The city was quickly rebuilt and grew to its modern prominence. Industry: Chemicals, textiles, aircraft, automobiles, leather, pharmaceuticals Did You Know? Via Monte Napoleone, intersected by narrow side streets, is touted as the most elegant street in Milan, and one of the most sophisticated in all of Europe, where one can find the greatest concentration of famous fashion designers outlets, jewelers, furriers and antique dealers. Focus: Arts & Culture
In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and the Milan Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International presented a public theatrical performance based on I promessi sposi (The Bethrothed), in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater. Performers include Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, Gilda Gelati, Elsa Martignoni and David Gibbons. A reception was held afterwards in the G.A.R. Rotunda, where guests were able to mingle with the performers.

Focus: Arts & Culture The Milan Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, in collaboration with the Italian American Chamber of Commerce Midwest, hosted a dinner in celebration of Italy’s 150th Birthday at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. Special guests included Alessandro Motta, Consul General of Italy in Chicago and Renato Turano, former Senator of the Italian Republic.
The Milan Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, present a reading by Maria Gabriella of her book Jewellery of the House of Savoy, followed by a reception.

Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, author and actor will perform a dramatic reading from “I promessi sposi,” in Italian with English supertitles. He will be accompanied by Gilda Gelati, first ballerina of the ballet company of Teatro all Scala, and by Elsa Martignoni, violinist of the Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milano.
