Chicago’s Sister City Since 1973 Country: Italy Country Location: Southern Europe Country Population: Over 60 million City Population: Over 1.5 million Geography: In the north west of Italy on the largest plain in northern Italy History: Milan can easily trace its history to Roman times, as is evidenced by Roman ruins which are still visible throughout the city! The city became a city-state in the 11th century and entered a period of rapid growth. It came under Spanish rule in 1535 and passed to Austria in 1713. Napoleon made Milan the capital of his Italian Republic in 1802. During World War II the city was heavily bombed, but many artistic and cultural treasures, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, were left intact. The city was quickly rebuilt and grew to its modern prominence. Industry: Chemicals, textiles, aircraft, automobiles, leather, pharmaceuticals Did You Know? Via Monte Napoleone, intersected by narrow side streets, is touted as the most elegant street in Milan, and one of the most sophisticated in all of Europe, where one can find the greatest concentration of famous fashion designers outlets, jewelers, furriers and antique dealers. MILAN: To Host 2015 World
The northern Italian city of Milan was chosen Monday as the site of the 2015 World’s Fair.
Milan won out over the Turkish port city of Izmir in a vote of 86-65 by members of the Paris-based International Exhibitions Bureau.
