The China Committee is pleased invite you to the first of the regular Dumpling Club dinners on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Wednesday’s event will feature a talk by China Committee member, Ted Foss, about Chicago looking at East Asia. Ted is the Associate Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at The University of Chicago .
The program will discuss the Chinese-American community in Chicago in the 1880’s, a Chinese graduate of the “old” University of Chicago and his fight against the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Chinese boycott of the World’s Columbian Exhibition in 1983, the strange case of Berthold Luafer and the Field Museum, great Chicago Asian art collectors like Kate Buckingham, and follow through to the collapse of AIG in 2008-09 and its implication for the future of Asian Studies.
The Dumpling Club is designed as an informal get together of China Committee members and friends who are interested in China related topics.
