VILNIUS: Lithuanian Mardi Gras – Shrove Tuesday Celebration

Winter, winter, be gone, leave our yard!

Chicago-Vilnius Sister City International and Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture invites you and your family to the Shrove Tuesday celebration at the Balzekas Museum on Saturday, February 21, 2009.

Shrove Tuesday is one of the most joyful Lithuanian Calendar Festivals. It celebrates the end of winter and it also is the last day before the Lent and seven weeks before Easter. During this celebration, attention is concentrated on chasing away winter with all its evils. It is a day when people should have fun, laugh and be happy.

The festivities will start at 11:00 a. m. with Shrove Tuesday Masks Workshop – artistic family affair. It will be directed by professional artist Rasa Ibianskiene. During the workshop you will learn how to make a traditional Lithuanian shrove Tuesday mask. You are welcome to bring all kinds of materials such as paper, fur, tree bark, buttons, fabric, yarn and all other things you might wish to use. We invite everybody to wear Shrove Tuesday carnival costumes and masks made during the workshop or earlier. The best costume and mask will be awarded.

Traditional Shrove Tuesday food – pancakes will be served.
We will have a lot of fun!

Fee:
Adults $12
Children under 12 @$ 6
