WASHINGTON, DC – Sister Cities International announced today that Chicago Sister Cities International was selected as the recipient of the Innovation: Sustainable Development and Innovation: Youth and Education awards for cities with a population greater than 500,000. Chicago Sister Cities International will be recognized at Sister Cities International’s 54th Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“We are pleased to recognize Chicago Sister Cities International for this outstanding achievement in citizen diplomacy in 2009,” said Patrick Madden, president and CEO of Sister Cities International. “Our awardee programs demonstrated a real impact in their own city and around the world.”
In 2009, the Chicago Sister Cities International China Committee hosted its inaugural Chicago-China Green Building and Technology Summit. The event brought together business, civic, and educational leaders from Chicago and Shanghai to discuss green architecture, sustainable building, and retrofitting existing structures.
Also in 2009, Chicago Sister Cities International worked with partner Chicago Public Schools to add Safari Live Technology to its Sister Schools Abroad Program. The interactive videoconferencing technology allows classrooms around the world to connect students easily and economically. This past year, Chicago Sister Cities International collaborated with the Chicago Public Schools, the City of Chicago, and the University of Chicago during the October 2009 Chicago International Education Conference to produce resources for schools and educators to facilitate an international exchange of ideas.
Each award recipient will receive a Sister Cities International commendation during the Lou Wozar Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, July 31 at noon at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque. The Annual Awards Program was established in 1962 to recognize outstanding sister city programs. Winners were selected by a distinguished panel of judges for achievements in 2009.
The 2010 Annual Conference was made possible through the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Department of State, Department of Energy, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Americans for the Arts, and the Carvey Family.
